A Competitive Path to Your MD & PhD

Bridge research and medicine with Katz’s MD/PhD program and gain the skills to become a physician-scientist who drives discovery and improves patient care.

Over the course of the program, you’ll complete both degrees. Start with medical school foundations, then advance through doctoral research, and finish with clinical rotations. As one of the nation’s fully funded MD/PhD programs, we offer full tuition and a competitive stipend to three students each year, so you can focus entirely on their research and training.

Discover what sets our highly competitive MD/PhD program apart. Learn more about admission requirements, the application process, and how to take the next step toward joining a select group of future leaders in medicine and research.

The MD/PhD program is really cool because there aren’t very many of us, and every single one of us is insanely passionate about a different field… Once a week we have grand rounds where we're presenting what we're working on, or a patient case that relates to the research we're doing. It's so rewarding. I retain that information much better than anything that I'm ever going to learn in a textbook, and it's cutting edge—things that are being published in scientific journals, not textbooks. I love my fellow MD/PhDs, and I'm really grateful for them being my teachers.

MD Foundations & Rotations

Years 1-2

In your first year, you'll begin the MD curriculum with pre-clinical Phase 1 coursework. Complete four lab rotations to explore research areas, build your scientific foundation, and select your PhD track within the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program.

PhD Research & Training

Years 3-6

Transition into full-time PhD research. Complete graduate coursework, conduct original investigations with your mentor, and carry out a dissertation project. Most students complete this phase in 3–4 years, depending on research progress.

Clinical Medical Training

Years 7-8

Return to medical school to complete phases 2 and 3 of clinical training. Phase 2 includes core clinical rotations, while Phase 3 focuses on advanced rotations and electives. You’ll graduate with both MD and PhD degrees, ready for a career in research and medicine.

Review Process

Step 1: Initial Review

The MD/PhD program director and a screener from the MD program perform a holistic review of complete applications.

Step 2: Interviews

Selected candidates attend a combined interview day with:

  • The Medical School Admissions Committee
  • The MD/PhD Advisory Committee

Step 3: Decision

  • The Medical School Admissions Committee oversees admission to the MD program
  • The MD/PhD Advisory Committee serves as the admissions committee for the dual-degree track and makes final decisions about MD/PhD acceptance
  • Together, the committees ensure applicants are qualified for both degrees

Additional Pathway:

First-year Katz MD students may also apply to join the MD/PhD program after matriculation.

Financial Aid

Most of the students accepted into the Program are provided with a MD/PhD fellowship throughout the seven or eight years of study. This includes full tuition remission throughout both the medical and graduate school years and a stipend. The stipend is presently $36,000/year while in the program.
