Message From the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine.

Our department brings together more than 35 world-class faculty who are dedicated to understanding how the heart, blood vessels, metabolism, lymphatic system, and thrombosis-related processes function in both health and disease. We translate new scientific insights into better patient care, while engaging trainees in broad-based, discovery-driven education and research across more than a dozen intersecting disciplines.

We are proud to be home to four leading research centers: the Aging + Cardiovascular Discovery Center, the Lemole Center for Integrated Lymphatics and Vascular Research, the Center for Metabolic Disease Research, and the Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center. Each center is led by nationally and internationally recognized scientists. Together, our teams collaborate across disciplines and with experts throughout Temple University and around the world to develop new ways to prevent, detect, and treat disease. These collaborations not only strengthen our competitiveness in securing research grants but also create dynamic, real-world learning opportunities for students and early-stage investigators.

Education is a central mission of our department. In partnership with the Department of Biomedical Education and Data Science, we provide exceptional training for graduate (MS, PhD) and medical (MD, MD/PhD) students, as well as postdoctoral fellows. Our trainees gain not only scientific expertise but also the critical skills needed to become independent thinkers and future leaders in research. We also take pride in mentoring early-career faculty, supporting their growth and success in academic medicine.

Our research continues to reveal the underlying causes of serious conditions such as heart failure, atherosclerosis, abnormal lung development, and brain-related diseases. These discoveries are paving the way for new therapies and helping to shape the future of medicine.

Whether you are a student, a fellow scientist, or a potential partner, we invite you to learn more, get involved, and be part of the discoveries that are transforming lives.
