How to Apply

Our Application Review Philosophy

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine conducts an individualized holistic review of each complete application to decide whom to interview. Factors include the following.

  • Academic history
  • College attended
  • MCAT® scores
  • Casper results
  • Recommendations
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Work experience
  • Medical-related experience
  • Community service activities
  • Research activities are considered but not required

The personal attributes of applicants and the corresponding pre-professional, thinking and reasoning and scientific competencies are considered during holistic review in the Katz admission process.  The areas of evaluation, including the personal attributes of applicants are based on the general competency domains used to define the school’s medical education program objectives. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Core Competencies for Entering Medical Students also served as a guide in developing the list of attributes.

How to Apply

Candidates apply through the American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®). The application deadline is December 15 of the year preceding matriculation. Temple considers applications from U.S. citizens or those with permanent resident or refugee/asylee status with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

After receipt of a verified application from AMCAS ®, an automated email from the Office of Admissions is sent to candidates who meet the above criteria with details about how to access the Katz online supplemental application. A candidate’s application is considered complete when the verified AMCAS® application, supplemental application, application fee (if waived), Casper results and required letters of recommendation are received. The supplemental application fee is waived for candidates who are approved by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Fee Assistance Program prior to submission of the AMCAS® application.

Supplemental Application

The supplemental application is used to help the school identify your unique interest in Katz. A $100 non-refundable application fee is collected online when you submit your supplemental application. The supplemental application fee is waived for candidates who are approved by the AAMC Fee Assistance Program during submission of the AMCAS® application.

Through the supplemental application site, you can

  • complete the supplemental application and pay the supplemental application fee,
  • upload USCIS documentation (permanent residents or refugee/asylee status),
  • send updates to Temple (additional letters, unofficial transcripts, etc.), and
  • monitor the receipt of checklist items including letters of recommendation, Casper, Institutional Action letter (if applicable) and more.

Once all checklist items have been received, you will receive an email confirming your application is ready for review.

Letters of Reference

Katz considers letters of reference from a premedical committee, a packet from a school letter compilation service, or between three and six individual letters.

  • Premedical committee letters do not need a specific number of science/non-science letters.
  • If submitting a compilation packet or individual letters, we prefer, if possible but do not require, two letters from professors with whom you have completed coursework from the AMCAS® course classification of biology, chemistry or physics. One additional letter is required from a nonscience professor, work experience or service activity.
  • We welcome letters from research experiences but prefer them in addition to the requested science letters from professors with whom you completed coursework. If submitting individual letters, we recommend submitting no more than six.

Katz participates in the AMCAS® Letter Service. Letters can be sent to AMCAS® through the AMCAS® Letter Writer Application or Interfolio. All letters should be on letterhead and contain the letter writer’s signature.

If Katz is designated as a recipient of the letter on the AMCAS® application, AMCAS® will release the electronic copy to Katz. All letters designated for Katz must be received for your application to undergo review.

At any point in the application process, you are welcome to submit additional letters to support your application and are encouraged to use the AMCAS® Letter Service to transmit these.

Statement of Goals

Applicants must submit a personal statement with their AMCAS® application.

Standardized Test Scores
  • MCAT®: Required. Every applicant must take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT®) within three years of matriculation and no later than September of the year in which the candidate applies. Applications are considered with the most recent MCAT® results, both sections and total. Katz will consider applicants for entering 2025 with MCAT® scores from 2022, 2023 and 2024. The last MCAT® we will consider for the entering 2025 application cycle is September 2024.
  • Casper: All applicants to the MD program are required to complete Casper, an online open-response situational judgement test. Casper is a scenario-based test that assesses non-cognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics that we believe are important for success in our program and complements the other tools that we use for applicant screening and selection. Applicants can register for the U.S. Medicine test (CSP-10111) at https://acuityinsights.app/. Casper test results are valid for one admissions cycle.

Note that Katz will not use DUET, Snapshot or the AAMC PREview™ Professional Readiness Exam in the admissions process.

Institutional Action

Applications from candidates who have received institutional actions are not considered complete until a school statement describing the incident and sanctions has been received. Once this letter is received, in addition to the materials above, the application can proceed to the review process.

On the supplemental application, you will have the opportunity to update your response from your AMCAS® application. Applicants who receive an institutional action after the AMCAS® application has been submitted are required to send a letter to the Office of Admissions with details of the event.

The supplemental application contains instructions for how the appropriate institutional official (for example, dean of students, judicial officer) can provide the school statement. This document should outline the details of the event and the outcome of the institutional process. A statement about Institutional Action in your pre-health committee letter does not meet our requirement.

Admission Deadlines

Coursework Requirements and Recommendations

Katz prefers a minimum of 90 semester hours from a U.S. or Canadian university. Applicants should demonstrate preparation for the rigors of medical school and achievement in the sciences through completion of a broad range of science coursework and the MCAT® exam.

Although the Admissions Committee holds no preference for science majors, all applicants—whether science majors or not—must demonstrate capacity for excellence in the sciences. While there are no absolute course requirements, Katz recommends that students complete coursework in biology, chemistry (both general and organic), biochemistry, physics, psychology and sociology. In addition, students should have a broad humanities education and strong writing skills.

The Office of Admissions will only evaluate courses completed at a U.S. or Canadian university.

Bachelor’s degree in discipline/related discipline: A baccalaureate degree  is required. Students who matriculate through the Temple University Accelerated Health Scholars program will earn their bachelor’s degree after the first year of medical school. If recommended coursework in biology, chemistry or physics is completed using AP credits, online at a community college or through a study abroad program, we prefer to see classroom-based, upper-level science coursework in that discipline.

Master’s degree in discipline/related discipline: A master’s degree is not required.
