Temple University Health System has announced that the new campus acquired in June by Temple University Hospital (TUH) at 1331 East Wyoming Avenue in Philadelphia will become a hospital for women’s health, pending PA Department of Health review and approval. The announcement comes after a group of key Temple Health stakeholders carefully considered what mix of healthcare specialties at this new campus would best serve Temple’s patients and its community by expanding access to Temple’s outstanding academic medical services.

“Temple University Hospital’s new specialty campus will offer women and families a safe, welcoming environment, complete with modern, spacious patient areas and outdoor landscaped walking trails creating a tranquil setting in the heart of Philadelphia,” said Michael A. Young, MHA, FACHE. “Exceptional services are being designed to ensure that our patients have access to the highest quality care in a patient-centered environment, and are able to achieve the best outcomes regardless of their social and economic circumstances.”

The campus will offer a myriad of services focused on women’s health needs. Key among those is maternity care. TUH delivered more than 2,200 babies last year. Its maternal care services offer a comprehensive and coordinated approach to pre- and post-natal care and education, and with no obstetrical mortality in 5+ years despite the high acuity of its patients. TUH’s newest campus allows Temple to expand and improve these services: with private rooms for mothers and babies, clinical space for 12 labor & delivery/high risk antepartum beds, 32 post-partum beds, 8 ICU beds, triage and stabilization area, an expanded neonatal unit, more than 75 exam rooms, plus radiology, mammography, MRI, and CT.

In addition to ob/gyn, the new campus will offer specialty care for women to be finalized over the next several months, including general surgery, breast surgery, vascular surgery, urology, internal medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, and behavioral health.

The Percival Roberts, Jr. Trust has committed a significant amount to name the new 36-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the first gift in what will be a significant fundraising campaign in support of the new campus. The Percival Roberts, Jr. Trust has a rich history of advocacy and generosity supporting children's health at Temple Health and across the Philadelphia region.

“We aim to begin offering these services at the new campus in late 2022,” added Young. “Details still need to be finalized, and we are engaging diverse groups of nurses, physicians, and support staff to diligently work on the final plan. As demand for Temple’s excellent clinical services and exceptional outcomes reaches new highs—thanks to our team’s efforts—the opening of this hospital will expand access for our community.”

The new campus also provides much-needed administrative service space to replace the Temple Administrative Services Building (TASB). Temple anticipates the new administrative office space to become available for use by spring 2022.
