Welcome to Temple Anesthesiology!
We are excited about your interest in our residency program and are eager to share details about the truly outstanding training experience you will receive as a resident in the Department of Anesthesiology at Temple University Hospital (TUH).
Residents in Temple Anesthesiology are given exceptional clinical and academic training to develop the expertise necessary to function as consultants in anesthesiology. While the majority of training occurs at TUH, our training is enhanced by rotations at Jeanes Hospital, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. TUH is a nationally recognized level I trauma center with a high volume of critical trauma patients. We have a robust transplant service, which includes heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants. Our lung transplant program is one of the most active and experienced in the nation, and it has been ranked #1 nationally for eight consecutive years. Between the transplant volume and general cardiothoracic surgery procedures, our residents learn to manage some of the most clinically challenging cases in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. With over 2,000 births annually with a high rate of medical comorbidities, our residents are routinely exposed to complex obstetric cases. Most residents easily surpass ACGME case minimums by the conclusion of their initial rotations in cardiothoracic and obstetric anesthesiology. Both TUH and Jeanes Hospital have a high volume of orthopedic, vascular, and general surgery cases which provide ample opportunities for honing regional anesthesia skills. In the CA-2 and CA-3 years, residents rotate through the renowned Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children for a comprehensive pediatric experience. Additionally, for those wishing to pursue fellowship training, Temple Anesthesiology has an outstanding track record of placement into nationally recognized fellowship programs across all major subspecialities of anesthesiology including cardiothoracic, pediatrics, obstetrics, chronic pain, regional/acute pain, and critical care.
The residency program provides a robust didactic curriculum that begins with an 8-week orientation period in the summer of CA-1 year. During this orientation period, new residents receive focused one-to-one training with an attending in the operating room in the morning followed by dedicated lectures or high-fidelity simulation sessions in the afternoon. Didactic training continues after the orientation period with our educational series. Residents receive an entire half-day of protected time per week for lectures, simulations, case discussions, and hands-on echo training. The high-fidelity transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiogram simulations provide excellent preparation for written and oral boards as well as the American Board of Anesthesiology OSCE. The education curriculum also includes weekly Grand Rounds lectures, monthly journal club, and research meetings. Residents have at least six weeks of dedicated research time throughout residency to participate in research and quality improvement projects of their choosing, which has led to many opportunities for our residents to present at both national and regional conferences. We have dedicated faculty and leadership invested in resident education, development, and wellness.
Philadelphia is a lively city with a relatively low cost of living accompanied by rich attractions including iconic art, “America’s most historic square mile,” year-round sporting events, an acclaimed culinary scene, and world-class museums. If you’re looking to explore outside the city limits, Philadelphia’s central location in the Mid-Atlantic region provides convenient access to other east coast cities, the Jersey Shore, Pocono Mountains, and more! As a residency group, we enjoy our annual whitewater rafting trip in the Poconos, our fall paintball outing, Phillies games, our annual Department holiday party, and numerous happy hours. Our residents typically live in Center City or in one of the many vibrant surrounding neighborhoods.
Once again, thank you for your interest in our program!
