The one year non-ACGME fellowship consists of rigorous training in both inpatient and outpatient general and transplant hepatology. Fellows also participate in weekly lectures, meetings and conferences. The program is well suited for those seeking staff positions in clinical Hepatology and Liver Transplantation as well for those seeking further training in gastroenterology fellowship.
Curriculum
Inpatient
Fellows will have 3 months of dedicated inpatient time on the hepatology/liver transplant consult service. Fellows will be responsible for completing inpatient hepatology consults on a breadth of topics ranging from transaminitis and decompensated cirrhosis to acute liver failure. They will also evaluate those patients in need of urgent and non-urgent transplant evaluations and patients requiring pre- and post-liver transplant care. Fellows also gain experience rounding with Temple’s abdominal organ transplant surgeons on transplant patients. In addition, education is also a large component of the experience in the fellowship program and fellows will be responsible for education of residents and medical students on the service along with the attending physicians.
Outpatient
As the practice of hepatology is primarily in the outpatient setting, fellows receive 9 months of outpatient experience in the hepatology and liver transplant clinic at Temple University Hospital. Evaluation of patients including consults for transaminitis, viral hepatitis, and autoimmune hepatitis to primary biliary cirrhosis and hemochromatosis will provide excellent experience and education in general hepatology practice. In addition, fellows will evaluate and manage pre and post-transplant patients including immunosuppression and chronic medical management.
Presentations & Lectures
In addition to clinical duties fellows participate in a number of presentations, lecture series, meetings and conferences. Fellows are responsible for presenting at monthly liver pathophysiology conferences along with GI Fellows on various topics relating to liver disease about twice per month. You will be responsible for presenting cases at pathology conference on Thursday afternoons with the pathology department prior to reviewing pathology slides. Fellows participate at the weekly transplant listing meeting where they will gain experience in the process of multidisciplinary evaluation of listing patients for transplant and discussing current listed patients. Fellows also attend liver tumor board weekly with the radiology department where you will gain knowledge on the interpretation and assessment of liver masses and malignancies.
Research
Fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing research projects with hepatology and gastroenterology faculty. In addition, fellows are highly encouraged to undergo research of their own. Funds are available to attend and/or present at regional, national and international conferences.
