Makyla Daniels' decision to enter the Lewis Katz School of Medicine (Katz) at Temple University Physician Assistant (PA) program was driven by her passion for serving communities in need. "I wanted to go to a program that placed emphasis on health equity and servicing communities in need," she said. "Temple's focus on investing in our communities and advocating for better health within vulnerable populations aligns with my values. I feel most fulfilled when I'm servicing the people who I think need me most."
Makyla's background in biotechnology has also prepared her well for academic succession at Katz. She pursued a master's degree in biotechnology, where she gained a deeper understanding of the molecular basis of biological symptoms within the body. "I've always been interested in medicine, but I didn't want to just diagnose illness or disease," she explained. "I wanted to understand the pathology behind the disease and how it relates to clinical care,” During her graduate studies, Makyla had the opportunity to conduct research and take courses that sparked her interest in molecular genetics, disease mechanisms, developmental biology, protein biotechnology, and protein drug development, laying a solid foundation for her future studies.
Makyla believes that her background will provide her with a proficient understanding of crafting patient care plans and shaping her style of patient care. "I'm excited to put my education into action during the clinical year," she said. "I love that PAs are trained as generalists, allowing me to explore different specialties and interests. I'm entering the year with an open mind, excited to explore the many pathways available to me!"
In addition to her academic pursuits, Makyla is eager to engage with the community. Katz’s commitment to serving vulnerable communities resonates with her values, and she is excited to get involved with these communities throughout the clinical year at various clinical sites offered through the program. "I'm excited to be educated by professionals who see the importance of cultural competency in medicine and highlighting service within underrepresented communities," she said.
As Makyla begins her journey in the program, she is determined to positively impact the lives of those she will serve. With her passion for service and dedication to improving health outcomes, she is a resource to the Katz community.
