The Interventional Radiology department at Temple University offers a five-year ACGME accredited integrated IR/DR radiology residency. Two IR/DR residents are accepted per year. After completing a 1-year preliminary or transitional internship year, residents will complete 3 years in diagnostic radiology along side their diagnostic radiology resident peers, followed by dedicated 2 years in interventional radiology, to become board eligible for the IR/DR certificate.
Our program provides a comprehensive training experience that encompasses diagnostic and interventional radiology with a focus on providing superior clinical patient care in an academic tertiary and quaternary care setting.
The interventional radiology department performs a full spectrum of procedures that residents will train in. Over 12,000 IR procedures are performed each year across Temple University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center. Hands on training is paramount to success and residents easily surpass the minimum number of common and complex procedures required to be well prepared for the demands of being an IR attending.
In addition to procedural training, residents are intimately involved in periprocedural care including consult management, pre-procedure evaluation, treatment planning, post-procedure care, outpatient clinic, admissions, and discharges.
Residents are required to participate in daily board rounds, weekly film rounds, inpatient rounds, tumor boards, resident conferences, and morbidity and mortality conference. Furthermore, IR faculty and residents are actively engaged in research projects with conference presentations and publications at all major academic meetings and societies. Residents are given financial support and conference time for research activities.
The IR residency lecture series is comprised of conferences covering vascular and nonvascular interventions and other IR related topics. In addition to didactic lectures, residents also participate in journal clubs and case-based lectures for a comprehensive educational experience.
Rotations outside of Temple IR:
- Residents spend 1 month in the busy Temple surgical intensive care unit to gain additional training in the care and management of critically ill patients.
- Residents spend 1 month in specialty training on noninvasive peripheral vascular lab interpretation.
- Residents spend 1 month at the prestigious Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) to gain exposure to pediatric interventional radiology.
The IR/DR residency program at Temple University is a challenging but nurturing training environment that fully prepares residents for their future career. We pride ourselves in being a highly cooperative unit that emphasizes compassionate care and teamwork. Our department functions much like a family during our time working and learning together to provide the very best health care to our patients.
Program Aims:
The aims of the integrated interventional radiology residency program at Temple University Hospital are:
- To provide our residents with a supportive educational environment rooted in the practice of evidence-based medicine, to develop a thorough understanding of the clinical diagnosis and care of patients with diseases commonly treated with interventional radiology procedures.
- To enable our residents to develop expertise in the imaging techniques and interpretation skills needed for procedure planning, execution, and patient follow-up and achieve competency in performing common and advanced interventional radiology procedures such that they may practice autonomously and confidently upon graduation.
- To provide our residents with opportunities for research, teaching, and mentoring that will prepare them for and enable them to excel in an academic practice, if they should choose that path upon graduation.
