We’re thrilled that you’re considering the Integrated Interventional Radiology (IR) Residency Program at Temple Health! As a 700+ bed hospital in North Philadelphia, Temple offers early and extensive exposure to the full spectrum of interventional radiology.
During the first three years of residency, we rotate primarily through diagnostic radiology rotations. With outstanding instruction across all imaging modalities and a robust didactic curriculum, residents become confident in interpreting studies and communicating findings independently. By the time of the CORE exam rolls around, our residents are exceptionally well prepared.
In the dedicated IR years, residents become fully immersed in procedures. We are tasked to run the IR service—serving as the primary contact for consults, mentoring junior residents, and gaining leadership experience. Through a system of graduated autonomy, we rapidly develop proficiency in a wide range of procedures. This is always with the support and supervision from our attendings, who truly treat us as their peers and colleagues.
Temple University Hospital is renowned for its high volume of penetrating trauma, creating a unique learning environment where residents apply their imaging expertise and procedural skills in urgent, high-stakes settings—including gun and knife trauma. Due to the consistently high number of trauma cases, we have regular interdisciplinary collaboration with the Trauma Surgery and critical care services.
As part of Temple’s Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT), residents regularly manage acute, life-threatening pulmonary emboli. Our procedural experience also includes uterine artery embolization, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, hepatobiliary interventions, and dialysis access work, among others.
About one-quarter of our IR training takes place at Fox Chase Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. There, residents gain high-volume experience in Interventional Oncology, performing complex embolic and ablative procedures and managing all phases of patient care. We also rotate at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where we receive focused training in pediatric interventions at one of the top children’s hospitals in the country.
Importantly, our lives outside the hospital are never on hold. Temple residents enjoy a strong work-life balance, with enough free time to take care of family obligations, attend major life events, and enjoying the city with your co-residents. Living in Philadelphia means access to an incredible food scene, top-tier sports, live music, and the many historic and cultural attractions unique to the city.
We look forward to reviewing your application and hope you’ll join us at Temple. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need more information!
