The Clerkship Program offers a comprehensive four-week rotation in Emergency Medicine to fourth-year medical students attending LCME and AOA-accredited medical schools. During the rotation, students will participate in 13 eight-hour clinical shifts, gaining valuable hands-on experience in our main Emergency Department, Yellow Zone (intermediate care area), and Green Zone (low acuity area). This allows students to work closely with our experienced faculty and residents.
In addition to the clinical shifts, students will have the unique opportunity to gain exposure to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and ultrasound. They can also arrange an observation shift with the hospital's critical care transport service, run by the Division of Emergency Medical Services. Furthermore, students have the option to add an ultrasound shift to their rotation, enhancing their learning experience.
The didactic portion of the rotation is designed to provide a comprehensive educational experience. It includes a half-day orientation and three 2-hour sessions in the Simulation Center, where students will review various clinical cases. Moreover, students are expected to attend our weekly resident conference, allowing them to engage with and learn from our resident physicians. There is also an opportunity to participate in the resident Journal Club.
Visiting students interested in participating in the Clerkship Program should apply through AAMC VSLO. Applications are typically accepted from July to November.
We look forward to introducing you to our wonderful rotation and look forward to your application!
