Scholarship, including exposure to research methods and experience in quality and safety improvement projects are an integral part of fellowship education. In accordance with ACGME requirements, fellows are actively engaged in QI projects under the guidance of Division faculty, and participate in all levels of scholarship. Scholarship includes preparing and presenting findings from the literature for Journal Club and Renal Grand Rounds, as well as writing abstracts, case reports, and original articles with faculty mentorship. The majority of fellows present at national meetings such as The American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, and American Transplant Congress. Fellows also have participated in regional conferences as well as the Temple Department of Medicine Sol Sherry Research Day.
Fellows interested in research careers and/or academic careers can pursue developing a program with research faculty. For fellows with specific research interests, the second-year of fellowship can be tailored to provide more protected time for investigation, with the goal of applying for fellowship research funding. The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University has a number of research cores and centers that can provide an excellent research experience for trainees. Research mentors can be chosen from within or outside of the Division.
