ID - Clinical ProgramsThe Section of Infectious Diseases predominantly runs an inpatient consultation service at Temple University Hospital, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Temple University Hospital - Jeanes Campus bone marrow transplant center. Temple University Hospital is a 721-bed tertiary urban hospital that is privileged to serve the community of North Philadelphia as well as a referral center for the surrounding region. TUH is a level one trauma center with an American Burn Association accredited burn center, advanced heart failure program, specialized lung center, and active surgical departments. TUH provides a wide variety, acuity, and complexity of new consults as well as the opportunity to work with a number of specialized teams and services. Accordingly, we average six to seven new consults per day on general ID and two to three consults per day on the transplant service. Fox Chase Cancer Center, located in the Fox Chase area north of Philadelphia, is a National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer center, with approximately 80 beds.  We see about one to two new consults per day at Fox Chase Cancer Center and the adjoining Jeanes Campus bone marrow unit.

The Section of Infectious Diseases also has multiple busy outpatient clinics where fellows gain experience in diagnosing and managing a variety of conditions. The first is a travel medicine practice where patients are seen for counseling and vaccination prior to their departure. Returning travelers are also seen when needed. In addition, we have a comprehensive virology clinic that focuses on HIV treatment and prevention as well as hepatitis C treatment. Our General Infectious Diseases outpatient practice provides continuity and follow up for our patients initially seen in the inpatient setting. Additionally, patients can be referred to our office by other providers in the region.

To summarize, the Infectious Disease training program spans both inpatient and outpatient care. There is a wide degree of diverse cases, presentations, complexity and acuity, with the added benefit of gaining experience with both bone marrow transplant patients and solid organ transplantation.
