Fellows in Temple’s Thoracic Surgery Residency Program will receive in-depth experience, and rotations in the following areas:
Thoracic Surgery
The thoracic surgery faculty includes notable leaders in thoracic oncology, lung disease, foregut pathology and education. Fellows will gain a diverse and robust experience in multidisciplinary management of thoracic diseases. Strengths of the program include an opportunity for fellows to develop of a foundation in open, minimally invasive and robotic techniques. Fellows will also become skilled in advanced bronchoscopic and endoscopic techniques including EBUS, stenting, and ablative procedures, POEM, G-POEM and gastric stimulators. Fellows will have clinical rotations at Temple University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center. Fellows will also have protected time for research collaborations. Thoracic surgery faculty are part of the Temple Lung Center, the Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery and Fox Chase Cancer Center, giving fellows access to one of the most active and well-funded thoracic research programs in the county.
Cardiovascular Surgery
The cardiovascular surgery program is home to some of the most highly respect cardiovascular surgeons in the world. The fellows’ cardiovascular experience includes minimally invasive surgery for cardiac conditions, complex aortic, and endovascular surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), surgery for end-stage cardiopulmonary diseases including heart, lung, and heart-lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), coronary artery bypass, and valve surgery. Cardiovascular rotations are at Temple University Hospital.
Congenital Heart Disease
Temple’s cardiothoracic fellows train with the Nationally-recognized congenital surgeons at Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children. This service is known for its outstanding quality of care and superb outcomes. Without other surgery residents or fellows at Nemours, fellows receive a personalized apprenticeship experience in advanced congenital surgery as well as minimally invasive surgical approaches and hybrid techniques.
