Clerkship / Elective

This program is directed by Dr. Laura Douglass. The site program directors (Dr. Laura Douglass and Dr. Justin Friedlander) contribute to program development and other related matters. The students' performance in Urology in the USMLE is very good, and residency placement has been excellent. All students are required to give a presentation at the end of their rotation.
 
All third-year medical students assigned to Temple University Hospital and who decide to do an elective rotation in Urology spend two weeks on the service. Teaching/work rounds by the attending staff with the residents and the students are routinely performed daily. The students are assigned patients to follow. They present and discuss their patients on rounds. The Department of Urology's faculty gives four formal lectures to the third-year medical students during each block. These focus on BPH and prostate cancer, urologic trauma, bladder and kidney cancers, and erectile dysfunction.
 
During the rotation, the medical students participate not only in the surgical management of patients with urologic conditions but also are involved in the management of patients under the supervision of the resident and attending physician. We strive for continuity of care by allowing the student to evaluate the patient before, during and after therapy.
