Conflict of Interest in Teaching and Assessment Policy

A faculty member or resident/fellow who has provided health services, including psychiatric/psychological counseling, to a student or who has a familial or other close personal relationship will have no involvement in the assessment, evaluation or grading of the student or in decisions related to the academic progress and promotion of that student. 

Faculty who provide academic counseling/coaching to students may participate in teaching but cannot be involved in the assessment, evaluation or grading of those students or in decisions related to the academic progress and promotion of the students that they counsel.  

It is the responsibility of both the faculty, resident or fellow and the student to contact the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education as soon as they become aware of a situation in which the student has been assigned to work with a faculty, resident or fellow with whom there is a conflict of interest.  The policy may not be waived even if both parties agree.
