Alina Shevchenko, CST'14, MD'18, Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Lewis Katz School of Medicine and Fox Chase Cancer Center, has carved out a distinctive place in medicine, shaped by her rich multicultural background and multilingual skills. Speaking Ukrainian, German, Russian, and English, Dr. Shevchenko uses her unique talents to bridge gaps in patient care and mentorship, making her a leader in fostering inclusion and empathy within the medical field.
“My multicultural background has deeply influenced my journey at Temple,” she shares. “Being able to communicate in multiple languages allows me to connect with patients and colleagues in ways that go beyond the clinical.” Dr. Shevchenko’s connection to Temple runs deep, starting as an undergraduate and continuing at Katz, and residency at Temple University Hospital. “Temple’s focus on diversity and inclusion mirrors my own values,” she says. “That sense of belonging is what has kept me here throughout my career.”
Dr. Shevchenko’s journey was marked by distinctive challeneges. “It wasn’t always easy,” she recalls. “I dealt with language barriers and sometimes faced implicit biases. But rather than seeing them as setbacks, I used my linguistic and cultural understanding to connect more meaningfully with my patients.” Her ability to speak multiple languages not only helped her overcome obstacles but became a vital part of her approach to patient care. “There’s something powerful about being able to speak to patients in their native language—it builds trust and understanding that’s hard to replicate otherwise,” she says.
Her sensitivity to the needs of diverse populations extends into her role as a mentor. “As a faculty member, I’m always conscious of the cultural and linguistic challenges students from different backgrounds face,” she says. “I aim to create an environment where everyone feels supported and heard.” In today’s globalized world, with a growing number of refugees and immigrant patients needing medical care, Dr. Shevchenko’s work has become increasingly significant. “I’ve seen firsthand how important it is for patients to not just receive care but to feel understood on a deeper level. That’s what drives me,” she adds.
The most rewarding part of her career? Seeing the direct impact her training has on her patients. “What I love about my work at Fox Chase Cancer Center is that the knowledge I’ve gained helps real people,” she says. “Providing culturally sensitive care is something I’m passionate about, especially for underserved or immigrant communities.”
When it comes to advice for young women entering the medical field, Dr. Shevchenko emphasizes resilience. “Don’t be afraid of challenges—embrace them,” she advises. “Medicine is demanding, but your passion and perseverance will carry you through. Temple taught me that every obstacle is an opportunity to grow.”
Dr. Shevchenko’s journey is a powerful example of how diversity and empathy can shape a meaningful career in medicine. Through her work, she continues to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals while making a profound difference in the lives of her patients.
